Floor varnishing & finishing

This is the latter end of the job where all the preparation, gap filling and sanding of the floor is complete and the next stage is to make it all look good.

 

Thorough cleaning is needed

Obtaining the best finish still requires the touch of a skilled person and a great deal of preparation in terms of cleaning up every speck of dust which would show up like a lighthouse in a lacquered finish if not carried out thoroughly.

Sealing the floor

The next part of this treatment is to seal the floor, and for this we use a shellac base coat which aids adhesion and enhances the clarity and beauty of the wood.

Choice of finishes

One of a choice of finishes is used by your preference. Finishes are available in super matt, matt, satin and gloss, although our advice is to opt for the matt or satin finish because gloss version does not show as good clarity. The finishes we use are the ones typically used in commercial premises such as dance halls, bars and clubs as these have been proven to have a long life and be hard wearing.

There are some modern environmentally friendly finishes such as some of the water based lacquers which are usually of Swedish origin developed in the 1970's and which are virtually odourless and have a zero fire rating.

Shellac is another environmentally friendly finish though this option is far from odour free and it is also flammable at the time of use.

Alternatively you may opt for the more traditional wax mixture of paraffin wax, beeswax and carnauba wax, which has a very pleasant smell and can be used on the floor as a cleaner / polish at any time to replenish the sheen.
