History and background Lewisham is reported to have been founded by Leof, a pagan Jute in the 6th century. He settled near St Mary's Church (Ladywell) by burning his boat where the ground was drier.
Etymology of Lewisham. In ancient Saxon records Lewisham was called Levesham, meaning 'the house among the meadows' The words leswe, lęs, lęse, or lęsew, in Saxon, signify a meadow and a dwelling, or 'ham' completes the name. A Latin legal record of the 1400s, mentions a place in Kent 'Levesham' which may be referring to Lewisham. The age of the area reflects the housing stock, which dates from many periods from Victorian and Georgian onwards in the main and many of the older houses have wooden floors which canoften be sanded and repaired to make them an attractive feature of the house.
