The older houses in Hackney, often originally had wooden floors
The history of Hackney means that there are plenty of fabulous wooden floors, often remaining under carpets, which could be restored to their former glory. There are many older buildings in the area and larger upper class houses which may have much more specialised wooden floors too.
Historical use of wooden floors in houses: The borough of Hackney has a rich history with Ermine Street, a Roman road, forming the western boundary and the River Lea marking the eastern boundary. Hackney lay within the Catuvellauni 'pre Roman' tribal territory. In ancient times, there was marshland around the rivers and streams, but most of the land was covered by open oak and hazel woodlands. As with the rest of England, during the Tudor period, lands of religious orders, having been seized by the Crown were then sold. So it was that Hackney became a rural retreat for the nobility around Hackney Central and Homerton, and remained as a rural retreat until the late Georgian period. Gradual development of the area, as well as the expansion of housing stock and London meands that many of the houses in Hackney today still have fantastic wooden floors that need resanding from time to time. Sutton House, on Homerton High Street, is the oldest surviving dwelling in Hackney, being built in 1535. See more about Hackney here.
Sanding wood floors in Hackney, London
Wood floors can remain serviceable for hundreds of years if properly looked after. However, leaving defects and imperfections over a long period, can result in the deterioration of surface. Although old surfaces often appear beyond repair, it is quite surprising that most wooden flooring can be restored to an excellent condition. Layers of old varnish, years of neglect, marks from carpets and building work are common reasons for loss of good condition in older floors, such as those in some of Hackney's older houses. Even under these conditions, the right treatment and re-varnishing can bring a surface back to its beautiful natural look.
